iPass and Meetinghouse Work to Improve Wireless LAN Security for the Mobile Workforce

Partnership to help establish end-to-end 802.1x security between Wi-Fi public hotspots and the enterprise

Redwood Shores, CA and Portsmouth, NH - February 15, 2005 - In an effort to drive industry interoperability of security standards, iPass Inc. (NASDAQ: IPAS) and Meetinghouse, today announced a partnership agreement to simplify and further advance 802.1x-based network access solutions for mobile enterprise networking. The companies will extend product integration efforts that are focused on allowing easy deployment of standards-compliant, multi-vendor security solutions for the enterprise. The companies have worked together on end-to-end, Layer 2 (L2), server based security solutions to enable enforcement of corporate security policies that are available from iPass now.

Today's 802.1x solutions for cross-operator Wi-Fi roaming only work to protect the user's login and session information from the mobile computer to the hotspot operator. iPass and Meetinghouse will endeavor to enable end-to-end protection of these corporate assets across the internet and all the way to the enterprise AAA infrastructure.

iPass and Meetinghouse joint efforts and focus include:

  • The integration of Meetinghouse's AEGIS™ Client security technology with the iPass iPassConnect™ universal client solution to enable secure, standards-based access to the enterprise by the mobile professional when 802.1x- or WPA-capable networks are used.
  • Development of an end-to-end, server-based, network authentication solution that enables TTLS, a tunneled Extended Authentication Protocol (EAP) method, to be used to secure mobile networks without the need for expensive overhauls of enterprise back-end user access servers.
  • The development of an industry demonstration that shows the iPass solution for end-to-end, server based network authentication solutions using the PEAP method of EAP.
  • Coordinated efforts within the Trusted Computer Group (TCG), Trusted Network Connect (TNC) sub-group with the goal of ensuring endpoint security with system interoperability and integrity.

"iPass has partnered with Meetinghouse on many ongoing initiatives to show the benefits of 802.1x-based, end-to-end public access network security solutions," said Roy Albert, CTO at iPass. "Our innovative work includes the use of a tunneling authentication method for public access networks that works to provide greatly increased security to Wi-Fi hotspots that connect to enterprise networks. Together, we continue to pioneer 802.1x-capable solutions for global Wi-Fi hotspot access."

"The shared goal of iPass and Meetinghouse to enable ubiquitous Wi-Fi access for mobile enterprise professionals makes this a particularly exciting collaboration," said Paul Goransson, President of Meetinghouse. "We look forward to continued work with iPass on Layer 2, end-point security solutions and all the future phases of wireless LAN network security and management for the enterprise."

iPass and Meetinghouse have been working together on 802.1x-based network access solutions since iPass introduced 802.1x support for its iPassConnectTM universal client in 2003. Together both companies achieved important milestones for secure Wi-Fi roaming, including their collaboration in the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) Singapore test-beds where both companies demonstrated a Wi-Fi security migration path at CommunicAsia 2004.
